The concept behind the Yoga Shala building is rooted in the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a graceful butterfly. Just as the caterpillar undergoes a profound transformation, yoga practice is a personal journey towards enlightenment and self-discovery. The design aims to capture the essence of this journey by creating an interconnected space that inspires and uplifts.
The building program includes the Yoga Shala itself, an atrium, Xeriscape Garden islands, a Stone Teahouse, and Cultivation Levels. The Teahouse serves as a neutral backdrop, while the organic-shaped garden islands define the layout of the circulation paths and seating areas. The atrium, with its centerpiece Olive Tree, adds a sense of spatial quality, while the cultivation plantings provide engaging activities for visitors.
The form of the Yoga Shala was derived from the geometric transformations of a butterfly cocoon model. Through an iterative process, the complex geometry of the cocoon was simplified to create a building that gently embraces its surroundings. The structure consists of primary and secondary structural wood contour beams, with a horizontal perimetric bench-like shelf that reinforces the building's stiffness and doubles as seating.
Energy efficiency and sustainability were key considerations in the design. The building's skin is composed of layers of plywood sheets, thermal insulation, and structured titanium panels. The curved building skin incorporates photovoltaic panels, while the Pasiv Haus construction envelope maximizes energy efficiency. Adequate natural lighting and ventilation are achieved through strategically placed openings, and rainwater and greywater are purified and stored in a water tank.
The functionality of the Yoga Shala is carefully thought out to enhance the yoga experience. The floor plan is organized into an organic-shaped volume, with separate entrances for the Shala and the Xeriscape Atrium. Wide glazing openings flood the space with natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Storage for yoga equipment is seamlessly integrated into the wooden structure, ensuring a clutter-free environment. Aerial Yoga Swings can also be hung from the structural beams, providing a unique and safe experience for practitioners.
The project, which started in October 2020 and concluded in December 2020, is located in a picturesque region of central Portugal. It is part of a larger Yoga Retreat Center that aims to provide a serene and rejuvenating environment for visitors. The design of the Yoga Shala was the result of extensive research into the geometry of butterfly cocoons and the construction techniques of vernacular Indian huts.
This innovative design has garnered recognition and acclaim, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2022. The Yoga Shala building stands as a testament to the power of design to create spaces that inspire, transform, and connect.
